When “Smart” Decisions Create Hidden Risk and Technical Debt

The Smart Home Is Becoming More Secure

The smart home market is evolving rapidly, with consumers increasingly seeking solutions that combine convenience, security and remote control.

Within this landscape, smart locks and intelligent access control systems are emerging as one of the market’s fastest-growing categories.

The increasing adoption of these technologies is no coincidence. It reflects a broader shift towards integrated home security and management ecosystems. According to recent market research, smart locks and smart garage door openers are now present in approximately 11% of internet-connected households in the United States. Although this figure may still appear relatively low, its steady growth suggests that the market is maturing rather than reaching saturation. As more households adopt smart home solutions, access control systems are becoming a fundamental part of the overall experience.

The primary driver of this growth is the clear value offered by smart locks. Unlike conventional locks, smart solutions provide remote control, temporary or permanent access permissions and instant information about who enters or leaves a property. This creates a new level of visibility and control, which is particularly valuable for families, property owners and commercial premises.

Integration with security systems is one of the most important catalysts for growth. Data shows that households with an existing security system are several times more likely to invest in smart locks. The difference is striking: approximately one-quarter of these households have a smart lock, compared with only a small percentage of those without a security system. This demonstrates that consumers no longer regard these devices as isolated gadgets, but as components of an integrated ecosystem.

The concept of smart access is also expanding beyond the home’s main entrance. The garage is emerging as a new strategic access point. With the growth of online shopping and home deliveries, many consumers use smart garage door openers to enable secure deliveries without exposing the interior of their homes. This practice combines security with convenience and addresses the needs of modern lifestyles.

Changes in consumers’ lives are another major growth driver. Moving home is one of the strongest catalysts for purchasing a smart lock. When households relocate, they are more likely to invest in new technologies that improve security and convenience. The same applies to renovations and new-build properties, where smart systems can be incorporated into the design from the outset.

Technological advances also play a decisive role. Modern smart locks now support interoperability standards such as Matter, enabling devices and platforms from different providers to work together. This reduces complexity for users and strengthens trust in the technology. New authentication methods, including biometrics and proximity-based unlocking, are also making the experience both more secure and easier to use.

AI plays a critical role within this ecosystem. By analysing behavioural patterns, systems can identify routines and adapt their operation accordingly. For example, they can automatically lock doors at specific times or alert users to unusual activity. This transforms smart locks from simple devices into active security systems.

Greater connectivity, however, also creates challenges. Data security and protection against cyberattacks are major concerns. As more devices connect to a network, the potential attack surface expands. Choosing reputable manufacturers, installing software updates regularly and using strong authentication methods are therefore essential.

The user experience remains equally critical to success. If a smart lock is difficult to operate or responds slowly, users may lose confidence in it. The balance between security and convenience is delicate and requires careful design.

Despite these challenges, the direction of the market is clear. Access control systems are evolving from standalone solutions into central pillars of the connected home. Their integration with security, energy management and automation platforms creates a unified environment that improves users’ everyday lives.

Further integration and automation are expected in the future. Smart locks will no longer function merely as entry points. They will become data hubs that communicate with other devices, make decisions and strengthen the overall security of a property. This development will also introduce new services, including predictive security and fully automated access scenarios.

Overall, the rise of smart locks reflects a deeper change in how we understand security. We are moving from passive protection to active management and control. Consumers no longer simply want to protect their property. They want to remain informed, maintain control and intervene immediately when necessary.

In this new era, businesses operating in the security and smart home markets have a significant opportunity to deliver solutions that are not merely “smart”, but genuinely useful, secure and reliable.
